View Full Version : Merger.. what happened and part II

Today I worked on merging the sites. I closed CofC and uploaded the database. I started the import and for the most part everything went smoothly. There were a few small issues, but I realized where I made a mistake. I ran the import wrong - instead of associating users by email address, I associated users by userID - this caused problems for a few people (95% of them ok, but it caused one key user to not be imported and a handful of others to lose some posts.) The forums, threads, and most everything else imported fine. There are things that won't import, but a lot of things will. Avatars will not import (I found this out today). Profile pics will not import.

When I attempted to fix this problem, it crashed the site - unrecoverable. So, I had to reupload the backed up database. Thus, we lost about 10-20 posts.

First thing in the morning I will back the site up again and re import CofC again. This time I believe I will know how to handle this.

Pray for me.

I have never been involved in the merger of two boards before, but I can't imagine it could be anything even compairing to easy. Good luck to you David and you have my prayers for a smoother run tomorrow. :praying

Yes you may go back and read every single one, and if you find any that are lost---well---if you find it that is---and can remember what you wrote---and can find the correct thread to post it in---especially if there is no matching thread here---well ummm-----

So are you going to try to do the members again, or should I have my friend Rita register here? She said she tried here first but there was some kind of problem so I had her register at CofC.

So, everyone from CofC should just re-sign up for CB?

davidw
November 18th, 2006, 8:55 AM
no, I've got a plan - I will attempt a 4th time today and after prayers from everyone I believe God told me how to do this - and it makes sense!!! :)
I woke up this morning with instructions on how to do it. So, this afternoon I will (having Faith) successfully merge the sites.

Jasma

what we need to do is move all the furniture from the living room onto the porch, then all the furniture from the upstairs bedroom into the living room and all the appliances into the kitchen.

From there well move all the stuff from the attic into the basement and all the stuff from the basement into the kitchen. After that we can start to clean the downstairs bathroom and move everything back. :D

So are all of us who were mods on CoC still gona be?

They
November 19th, 2006, 2:28 PM
boy, you've been gone a while....

we have a list posted somewhere.. *searches*... think so but not sure which capacity for everyone. most of the lower mod positions will be addressed after the successful merging of the two sites (which david is working on) then we'll start to get everything rolling.

davidw
November 19th, 2006, 4:54 PM
Yes, all staff will remain - I have a tentative list in the staff section right now. Once the merger is finished, I will make the Councilors and Moderators. I won't assign any forums until after the dust settles, but most people will have their familiar forums on the Moderator level.

The merger may happen soon and we may lose some posts - according to the IMPEX team, they were able to successfully import and will use a copy of the database from Sunday (3rd) which would mean we would lose about 2 days worth of posts/threads.

I will start the merger this morning some time and see how it goes, so the forums could be down for a half-hour or for a few hours.

I have the ImpEx team doing a merger and they will give me the results. I will import the results as soon as I get them (probably first thing in the morning). If it is successful, that will mean we will lose around 12 hours worth of posts, but will gain a merge. :) If not, I will reupload as usual.
